In 2018 mountain biking enthusiasts had the dream of providing youth mountain bike racing opportunities to Warren County. Our team registered as "the Hollow Riders" to participate in the TN League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. We're named for practicing in the Hollows (aka "Hollers" locally) of South Central Kentucky. In 2021 the Kentucky Interscholastic Cycling League was formed as an emergent league in NICA and all Kentucky based-teams began competing in their home state. Since it's inception KICL has grown from less than hundred athletes to over 300 in the 2023 season, representing 14 teams. The Warren County Composite MTB "Hollow Riders" have grown from 5 to 17 riders and continue to grow as more people in our area here about the exciting sport of mountain biking.
The Hollow Riders are a 6th-12th grade boys and girls mountain bike team. Our mission is more kids on bikes and building strong bodies, minds and community through cross-country mountain biking. We do not have a culture of winning at all costs. Every child's goals are identified individually and usually fall into categories of fun, friendship or competition. We teach riders to embrace the process of reaching goals and we continually encourage them to refine their goals. The podium at the end of the race is a wonderful accomplishment but the podium cannot be a goal in and of itself. It's the individual, defined variables to measure and progress in that lead you to the podium.
We practice 2-3 times weekly on local singletrack, gravel trails and skills areas. We use a variety of on/off the bike drills and trail riding to improve your riders mountain bike skills. Racing is a natural culmination of your rider's practicing but is not required to be on the team. We train your rider to be ready to race whether they plan to race or not as those skills improve their riding ability overall.
KICL's Teen Trail Corp gives recognition to our riders who put in trail hours, maintaining and building mountain bike trails in our area. Riders are recognized for their trail hours and building projects at our races and other events. Trail building is critical for our sport. We do not have gyms and stadiums to practice in! Our trail work is unique in it directly benefits the community, providing economic and health benefits to all of the community. KICL's mission statement is building stronger minds, bodies and communities through cross country cycling and trail building will be an expected and integral part of your rider's development on the team.
